Episode VII: The Force Awakens is released, beginning a new, Disney-made trilogy. It was generally well-received and a massive financial success, granting some faith in Disney's takeover of the franchise.

Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is released in theaters. The Rian Johnson-directed film was received well by critics, and incredibly divisive among fans. Some called it a masterpiece, others a confusing disaster.

Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is released in theaters. The final film in the Skywalker Saga was generally poorly received by fans and critics alike. It is the lowest-rated Star Wars film, with only a 52% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com

LucasFilm announces J.J. Abrams is set to return, replacing Colin Trevorrow as the writer and director of Episode IX.

Sept. 5, 2017

It is announced that Colin Trevorrow, the Jurassic World  director who had been slated to write and direct Episode IX, would be leaving the project. It was unclear whether he chose to leave or was fired. Later, it was revealed that LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy hated Trevorrow's script draft and removed him from the project.
